Every autumn, millions of Monarch butterflies begin a 3,000-mile migration from Canada to the mountains of central Mexico. It's one of the most extraordinary journeys in nature.
But no single butterfly completes the trip. It takes four generations — each one carrying the journey a little further, passing the mission to the next. The great-grandchild finishes what the great-grandparent started.
Except the Monarchs are disappearing. Colony populations have collapsed by over 50% in two decades. Habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change are erasing the migration route. The Kaleidoscope is fading.
